What Is Pension Credit?
Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit that tops up your income if you’re over State Pension age. There are 2 parts:
- Guarantee Credit — Tops your weekly income up to £227.10 single / £346.60 couple. This is what our calculator checks.
- Savings Credit — Extra payment if you reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016 and have savings or private pension. Max £17.01 single / £19.04 couple.
Even if you only get £1 per week, claiming unlocks free NHS prescriptions, dental, eye tests, Warm Home Discount £150, Cold Weather Payments, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, and free TV licence if 75+. Total value: £3,000-£8,000/year.
Who Qualifies for Pension Credit 2026/27?
Basic Rules
- You must be State Pension age — 66 in 2026/27. Couples: both must be 66+, or one 66+ and claiming Housing Benefit for you both
- Live in UK — England, Scotland, Wales. NI has separate rules
- Income below £227.10/week single or £346.60/week couple — After we count your pensions, earnings, most benefits
What Counts as Income?
| Counts | Does NOT Count |
|---|---|
| State Pension, private pensions, work earnings | Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction |
| Carer’s Allowance, ESA, JSA | Attendance Allowance, DLA, PIP |
| Savings over £10,000: £1/week per £500 | Child Benefit, Winter Fuel Payment |
Savings Rule — The £10,000 Threshold
First £10,000 of savings is ignored. For every £500 or part £500 above that, DWP adds £1 per week to your income.
- £10,000 savings = £0 added to income
- £15,000 savings = £10/week added to income
- £20,000 savings = £20/week added to income
Your home doesn’t count. Only bank accounts, ISAs, stocks, premium bonds, cash.
Extra Amounts — Severe Disability & Carer Additions
Severe Disability Addition: £81.50/week — If you get Attendance Allowance, DLA care middle/high, or PIP daily living, and no one claims Carer’s Allowance for you, and you live alone.
Carer Addition: £46.40/week — If you get Carer’s Allowance or have “underlying entitlement” — you claimed but don’t get paid because of another benefit.

Pension Credit FAQs 2026/27
I own my home. Can I still get Pension Credit?
Yes. Your home is ignored. Only savings, pensions and income count. 1 in 3 Pension Credit claimants own their home.
My partner is under 66. Can we claim?
Not normally. Since May 2019, both must be State Pension age. Exception: if you were already getting Pension Credit as a couple before 15 May 2019, you keep it. Or if you get Housing Benefit for a couple.
Will Pension Credit affect my other benefits?
It helps. Getting Guarantee Credit means you automatically qualify for full Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, free NHS care, Warm Home Discount. It won’t reduce your State Pension.
I have £20,000 savings. Is it worth claiming?
Yes. £20,000 adds £20/week to income. If your State Pension is £185/week, your total is £205/week — still £22.10/week short of £227.10 limit. You’d get £22.10/week = £1,149/year + all the free extras.
What’s the difference between Guarantee Credit and Savings Credit?
Guarantee Credit tops you up to £227.10/week — main benefit. Savings Credit is extra for people who reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016 and have modest savings. Max £17.01 single. Most new pensioners only get Guarantee Credit.
I was turned down last year. Should I try again?
Yes. Rates rise each April. £227.10 for 2026/27 is higher than 2025/26. If your income stayed same, you may qualify now. Also check if you now get Attendance Allowance — that adds £81.50 to your limit.
